Welcome to the world of Koniaków lace! It's a unique technique of hand crocheting using very fine cotton threads, known as "heklowanie". The tradition originated over a hundred years ago in the Beskid Mountains, in the village of Koniaków, in the southern part of Poland, in the Silesian Voivodeship.
The skill of lace-making has been passed down from generation to generation and has evolved into an art known worldwide, inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The patterns have been appreciated by personalities such as: Queen Elizabeth II of Britain, Pope John Paul II, Christian Dior, and Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garcons). In January 2022, they appeared at their largest-ever exhibition at EXPO 2020 in Dubai, representing the Silesian Voivodeship and Poland.
The mastery and creativity of the Beskid Highland women have ensured that the lace continues to evolve. It adorns not only caps and traditional doilies, table runners, but also interior decorations, clothing, lingerie, and jewelry. The online store was founded by me, Lucyna Ligocka-Kohut , MA in Ethnology, President of the Koniaków Lace Foundation, and owner of the Koniaków Lace Center, which houses the Museum and a small shop on site. Lace is my life and passion, and my main occupation is to ensure the continuation of our cultural heritage. I collaborate with and unite Koniaków lace makers, of whom there are 700 here. The store was created for those who want to purchase traditional products "straight from the source."
